The Propylaia roof was adorned with elaborate marble coffers which are in the form of stepped concave squares. The coffers defined by relief cyma and covered in blue colour had in their centre golden stars also rendered in colour. The particular double panel that comes from the central building is one of the finest examples of classical architecture.

In 1640 the explosion of the powder stored by the Ottomans in the central building destroyed a big section of the roof. In the beginning of the 18th century the Ottomans removed part of the monument’s superstructure and used its material to reinforce the Acropolis' fortification. In 1803 Thomas Bruce, lord of Elgin, forcefully detached architectural members of the Propylaia, among which was a capital. All ended up at the British Museum in London. Between 1909 and 1917 Nikolaos Balanos restored the Propylaia, however, the iron clasps connecting the architectural members oxidised thus causing problems. The new restoration work undertaken by the Acropolis Restoration Service in 1979 was completed in 2015.
